Make an Athena Mask

Florence Nightingale rescued an owl when she was in Athens, Greece. She named the owl Athena and kept it as a pet until it died in 1854. Florence’s sister Parthenope, wrote and illustrate a story about Athena for Florence called Life and Death of Athena, an Owlet from the Parthenon. Written in 1855 and sent to cheer up her sister, the book tells the story of an owl, found and adopted in Athens, who became Florence’s beloved pet.

When Athena died, Florence asked a taxidermist to preserve her and she is now in the Florence Nightingale Museum in London.
